Birthday flowers — what to give a woman, a man, your mum or a colleague
Flowers are the most universal birthday gift: they suit every age and character — the key is to choose well. In this guide our florists share their experience: which flowers to give to whom, and how to turn an ordinary bouquet into a memorable surprise.
For a woman
Roses or a seasonal mix in her favourite colours are a safe bet. If you do not know her colours, go for soft pastels — pale pink, cream, peach. In May and June you will hardly find a better gift than peonies, and in autumn hydrangeas and chrysanthemums in warm autumn tones.
For your mum
For a mother the colour matters especially: pink conveys care and tenderness, white conveys respect. A flower basket is another good choice — it keeps its shape for a long time and does not need to be moved to a vase. For an older person a compact arrangement in a box is better than a big, heavy bouquet: no vase needed.
For a man
You can give flowers to a man too — just in a different style. Choose strict shapes and deep colours: burgundy roses, plenty of greenery, tropical flowers such as strelitzia, anthurium and protea. An arrangement in a box or flowers together with a gift are good ideas.
For a friend or a colleague
For a friend, choose happy colours: yellow, orange, sunflowers, gerberas. For a colleague or a manager pick a neutral, elegant bouquet — white and green tones or a medium seasonal mix. When delivering to an office, add the company name and the floor to the address.
For a child
Flowers for a child go well with a colourful, playful extra: helium balloons, a toy, sweets. Little girls especially love pink bouquets and a flower box with a teddy bear.
What size to choose
Size depends on the relationship and the occasion. A medium bouquet suits a colleague or an acquaintance; someone close or your partner deserves a large one. For big milestone birthdays people often choose a large bouquet, 51 or 101 roses. Most of our bouquets come in three sizes — S, M and L — so choosing by budget is easy.
How to plan a surprise
- Order in advance and choose an exact time — for example 00:00, when the birthday begins
- Tick "surprise" — the courier will not call the recipient in advance
- Write the card message — it is free, and people often remember it longer than the bouquet
- If the recipient should not find out who sent the flowers, tick "anonymous"
One last tip
